Competition Reminder

imgp1486

There aren’t many free days left in the competition to guess when Horatio will finish his hike, but there are a few, so get guessing (a few in early September and late June are a good bet).  Horatio was checking out one of the prizes just now - the wodent wheel that has just arrived from the states!  If you want to win this and other mystery prizes then check out the calendar for dates that are taken (in red) and fill in your details and guesses! It’s Ok.. It’s Made From Apples

Cider is one of mother natures great gifts and what better way to enjoy it than in its traditional home.  Somerset is to cider what Tennessee is to whiskey so what better way to celebrate crossing of county lines from Devon into Somerset than to get mullered on the stuff?  Somerset was once awash with apple orchards, their numbers have now diminished but Somerset is still a major producer of cider (famous for some of the stronger varieties!) Horatio loved the sweet appley goodness and retired for an afternoon nap after a little over endulgence.  I hope he’s not too hungover for some running tonight (if he’s anything like me then tonight might be a struggle!).

Horatio Weighs the Same As….

Sleepy Horatio Searches For Food

A little weekend poll action for you Hamster Hike readers!  I bought some scales at the supermarket tonight (and a few surprises for a valentines breakfast for Horatio’s mum!) as I thought it would be interesting to chart Horatio’s weight.  So why not have a guess?, he’s watching so you’d better not guess too high - he’ll be offended!

We’ll post the answer next week!  For now enjoy the picture of Horatio in sleepy mode.

The Gateway to Exmoor

lynmouth-2007-2Horatio recently passed through South Molton (”The Gateway to Exmoor”) and stopped for some sunflower seeds at Michelle’s Mum and Dad’s house (pictured)! Michelle is an avid follower of Horatio and suggested a stop off for refreshment.  The generosity of Hamster Hike readers knows no bounds!

Horatio is now well into Devon and is rapidly approaching Somerset where he can’t wait to get his little hamster lips around a bottle of scrumpy!

If you think Horatio is going to pass through your town on his route and you can offer him some refreshment then please let us know at horatio@hamsterhike.co.uk he would love to pop in!

Horatio on Film

I recorded a short video of Horatio when we 1st got him, thought you guys might be interested in seeing how super cute he is when moving about his cage!

Wow!

Well it looks like we underestimated Horatio - he’s been running like a champ and has covered 4.5miles since 11pm last night! Amazing! Looks like he could definitely make the journey!

I should say the credit for the Land’s End to John O’Groats idea goes to Ben Cookman - Good call!

Testing

So we are testing the set-up and seeing how far Horatio can make it in a night - since 11pm last night he has managed a measly 0.572 miles reaching a top speed of 0.95mph, he’s going to have to stop twiddling his thumbs and get those knees (do hamsters have knees?) up!!

I think the kind of wheel we have is the issue - its attached to the cage and so has a spindle in the middle - this limits how fast he can run, I’m going to look into alternatives! This one has many rave reviews: (Wodent Wheel Junior)

Welcome!

Hello! This is the 1st post of many on Horatio the Hamsters EPIC adventure across the UK! Horatio is a 6 week old Syrian hamster!! He is pretty crazy and has decided that he would like to undertake the challenge of virtually hiking from Lands End to John O’Groats!

He was inspired by the travel musings of hamster Lizzie as she attempts to travel across Amercia http://www.hamsteracrossamerica.com/. She has already completed around 800 miles of her journey, nearly enough to complete the hike Horatio is planning!
