Horatio’s eyes are definitely bigger than his cheeks! Check out the picture, this carrot based biscuit treat is one of his favs and invariably he tries to get the whole thing in his cheek so he can hide it away in his house later, but he sometimes gets the angle wrong and it doesn’t quite fit. Here it is sticking out of his mouth haha!
He’s been fighting fit - we’re so close to 300 miles now, he’ll probably pass this milestone tonight.
Anyway - I’ve neglected the site for way too long so heres the last three weeks stats!

As you can see week ending 14.03.09 was pretty poor, and one of his worst weeks so far. Here’s the distance per day over the last three weeks (notice the 13th March was 0 miles - he was running for charity this day so it has been excluded from the stats!):
He picked up the pace over this last week and he’s ben notably more active of late, and still as cute as ever! There is some good news from over the pond too - Lizzie, the Hamster Across America hamster has started running again she’s passed into a new state and appears to be motoring! Check out her progress at http://www.hamsteracrossamerica.com
The stats are way down this week (he did his 1st sub 2 mile day; 1.8 miles on Wednesday), not too sure why, but he managed a 5.6 mile day yesterday so I don’t think he’s giving up just yet!! Here’s his daily break down:
He’s getting noticeably bigger these days, which might me why he is slowing down a little.
I must apologize, we didn’t do much posting on the blog last week, mainly due to Horatio being in between interesting places! But I hope next week will be a little more exciting! We had a visit from the editor at Petstreet today who shot some video of me and Horatio, so hopefully that will be going up on Petstreet soon.
We’ve raised over £100 (potentially) for comic relief - but need more sponsors!! Click here to make your pledge. If he only runs 2 miles on red nose day this figure could halve so we REALLY need your donations.
Another week has gone by, and it’s been a big one for the site! We were featured on a load of American radio stations as a ‘quirky’ link, it brought loads of new people to the site so welcome and we hope you stick around for some hamster fun. We are also in talks with a large pet social network site with a possibility for some integration into their main site, so watch this space!
I thought I’d stick a picture up of the whole family this week, Bryony, Horatio and Me. This was taken after we’d got back from a day or so away from the little scamp so we had to get him out for a BIG fuss! So what’s he done this week? (hit the read link!)
It’s a valentines flavoured weekly stats this week and Horatio has been motoring! This is the good news, but I have some bad news for you guys, Horatio did not receive 1 valentines card! He spent much of yesterday moping and feeling sorry for himself Leave him a nice comment and it might help him through these bad times. Hit the read more link for his graphs!
Horatio has seriously slowed down this week, but he is holding steady now, so I’m not too worried that he’s going to slow down anymore.
Miles Travelled: 20.92 (Last Week: 37.69)
Miles To Go: 795.57
(Last Week: 816.49)
Average Miles Per Day: 2.99
(Last Week: 5.38)
Revolutions: 58,735
(Last Week: 95,028)
Here is the breakdown of his distance over the past week per day (in an attempt to keep some perspective I’m keeping the Y-axis scale the same each week):
We were wondering if this cold British winter was affecting his running so to see if it’s getting too cold for him we have been monitoring the temperature over the last two nights. I’ve had the temperature monitor for a while but hadn’t got round to installing it, as it kept crashing. I’ve finally worked out how it all works and calibrated it with another thermometer (how stupid is this - you have to have ANOTHER thermometer to calibrate it! Luckily I work in a lab, so I borrowed a digital one from there). Here’s how Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights temperatures looked:
The white bars are a crude representation of when Horatio was up and running!! Temperatures obviously drop during the night, we will try to keep it warmer to see if this affects how much he runs. Watch this space!
I’ve updated the stats page with the latest graph of his distances since he started hiking.
I have installed some new ram in the Hamster Hike server going from 256meg to 1gb! This should increase the map load times significantly. I have optimised some of the database queries too to try and make it all a little quicker.
(BTW: Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac is the worst software I have ever used! It can’t even handle the hamster hike data - imagine if you had to use it for some serious data analysis!)
It’s been another successful week on the road for Horatio:
Miles Travelled: 37.69
(Last Week: 32.83)
Miles To Go: 816.49
(Last Week: 854.18)
Revolutions: 95,028
(Last Week: 82,754)
As you can see these are up on last week although he didn’t manage a 9 mile record breaking day, which I don’t think will be a regular occurrence! Heres the breakdown of how this weeks total panned out:
I’ve also updated the stats page with a graph of the 1st 2 weeks of Horatio’s journey! Take a good look at the data and make your educated guesses for the competition we’re running!
It’s been a successful week on the road for Horatio:
Miles Travelled: 32.83
Miles To Go: 854.18
Revolutions: 82,754
He’s got a new cage, a new wheel, and a new logo! He really is putting in the miles, and hopefully by the end of summer he might reach John O’Groats!
A big thanks to everyone who has followed his progress this last week, we hope you continue to! Please feel free to comment and email horatio any questions you might have! horatio@hamsterhike.co.uk
